Week 6 # 15 Just a few thoughts about Web 2.0

This is some what of an aside from tennis, but I wanted to let you know how and why this blog came to be. This blog has come about from a library project called Maryland Libraries 23 Things. For nine weeks librarians throughout the state of Maryland are currently creating blogs on various topics of interest in order to explore Web 2.0.

I was reading an article by Chip Nilges of OCLC, OCLC developed the WorldCat. WorldCat is a catalog capable of locating library materials throughout the world. The developing philosophy at OCLC is to use Web 2.0 as a means of harnessing collective intelligence, cooperative sharing, reaching out to the world. Their mission is gathering knowledge and spreading it to the world.

As tennis players we might want to use a similar approach and bring tennis on par with golf, no pun intended.

Week 3 # 7 Wimbledon bows to Technology

At the Championships players no longer need bow and curtsy in front of the royal box. And now those immortal words..."You can not be serious!" Shall never be heard on those hallowed courts again...for now Wimbledon shall bow to Hawk-eye.

How does it work? Six high speed video cameras transmit sixty frames per second to a computer to calculate the trajectory of the ball. One billion equations can be calculated for each rally. The bounce of the ball is pinpointed to within 3 millimetres. Amazing!!

American Men OUT! But Venus In!!

Another tough major for the guys!

Andy is gone too...so hats off to Richard Gasquet. The Gasquet backhand was just too much for Andy to overcome.

But, thank Heaven for little girls...because they can grow into superwomen and so seems to be the case with Venus Williams.

Good Luck in the Finals, Venus!!!
